books as comfort food

here's a whole new kind of personal coolness you never knew i had. last week, with the winter doldrums weighing heavy, i was rearranging an old stack of detective fiction which ben had cheerfully disrupted (he messes up my bookshelves with great drive and dedication). i picked up a morbid taste for bones, the first in the brother cadfael series. i bought it ages ago. probably in high school. (other teens watched 90210, i watched mystery! on pbs and got hooked on the brother cadfael mysteries. i was a paragon of cool.) i read it. i loved it. it's not quite my dad's pulp fiction (not dan brown, in other words), but almost. monks, murder, blood, etc. i was never going to admit reading it publicly, until i saw the blog post linked below and had an explanation for the book. comfort reading.

slate.com features a terrific blog called the happiness project, in which the blogger tries various tips for happiness (think features in o magazine, self-help books, etc.) and writes a snappy assessment of their effectiveness. the most recent blog post is about how people self-medicate with books. so great, i had to post a link. and confess.

you. are. so. cool.

also glad to know i wasn't the only one sneaking in 'Mystery!' on thursday nights (right?). i loved the intro. LOVED it. too bad we didn't know each other then. we coulda formed a covert 'Mystery' club.

my book as comfort food: East of Eden. read it for months, 1/2 hour at bedtime, almost every night my newlywed year. michael read Lord of the Rings. are we dorks or what?! we have recently re-instituted this ritual - only with different books. he is up to reading John Grisham now. heh. heh. me, 'Gilead'.

I confess to reading this series. Mostly during long winter nights at Dordt. It definitely qualifies as comfort reading.

In addition, Br. Cadfael has a number of great remedies for what may ail you. I wonder if he has some poultice for the winter doldrums?

i love this!!

my comfort reading is anne of green gables, and ESPECIALLY this collection of short stories not necessarily about anne, but the people she knows or almost knows. it's called 'tales from avonlea'. pure comfort.

Br. Caedfel is one of my special winter favorites. One winter I read one after another! Then I bought several DVD's. I was thinking of watching one tonight.
We all like the Tales of Avonlea as well as LM Montgomery's other girl books, Emily...
